About this produce

Sweet Bitterleaf is a cultivated variety of Vernonia amygdalina with significantly reduced bitterness compared to the traditional bitter leaf. The leaves are tender, dark green, and rich in vitamins and antioxidants. Because less washing and squeezing is required, preparation time is shorter — making it a practical and flavorful choice for everyday cooking.

Common uses

Excellent in egusi soup, ofe onugbu, and Cameroonian-style vegetable stews. Can be lightly blanched and sautéed with palm oil, crayfish, and smoked fish. Also works beautifully as a cooked vegetable side alongside rice, yam, or plantains. Its milder flavor makes it approachable for those new to African leafy greens.

Cultural importance

Sweet Bitterleaf bridges tradition and accessibility — it carries the soul of bitter leaf cooking while welcoming a wider range of cooks. Families across Nigeria, Cameroon, and the broader West African diaspora in Minnesota use it as a go-to green for weeknight cooking and special occasion dishes alike.

Seasonal availability

Sweet Bitterleaf is harvested during the warm growing season, typically from July through September. Fresh supply is limited per harvest cycle. Contact the farm to check availability and arrange pickup or delivery.
